Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a standard Xiaomi 5V/2A charger and it clearly doesn’t support fast charging. But the Snapdragon 636 chipset does support fast charging and we tried charging it with a quick charger and the standard charging icon changed to the quick charging icon.
But even though the icon showed quick charging, the device was charging at a steady state of 2 Ampere so quick charging doesn’t seem to be helping for this device and the device takes 2 hours to charge from 0-100%.
Redmi Note 5 Pro does a great job at gaming, you can play any game out there on this one and it won’t disappoint you at all. Redmi Note 5 Pro does support fast charging though you do not get a quick charger with the device you can use any other quick charger that you may have.
Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with 4000 mAh battery capacity which suffices for a full day of heavy usage and up to a day and a half for average users.
Let’s discuss the battery life of Redmi Note 5 Pro. So, the device has a 4000 mAh battery which is non-removable. And Snapdragon says that the 636 chipset used in this device is 40% more power efficient than its predecessor that is the Snapdragon 630.
When the battery was at 90% I started playing games. I played games for almost 4 hours, and then the battery reduced to 54 %. So, the device was able to provide me with a 4-hour heavy gaming performance with just 36 % battery which in my opinion is great.
Now let us have a look at the average daily usage performance. So, I charged the device to 100 % and started using. And after approximately 26 hours of usage, there was still 21% battery remaining.
I played games for some time and had my WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and messenger running in the background at all times.
So, the device gave a solid standby of 7 hours with just 4-5% of battery and just so you know my device was not on airplane mode and my Jio VoLTE was still on. (Read about JioPhone 2 WhatsApp Support)
Also, the device estimated that it could run for 4 more hours of mixed usage which means that it could definitely give me a screen on time of another 2 hours on this device.
So, I would say that the device can offer a full day of heavy performance and still be left with standby to make it till the next morning and people with average usage shouldn’t have trouble getting up to a day and a half with ease.
The design and build quality of the Redmi Note 5 Pro is very smooth. Redmi Note 5 Pro has a metal unibody. The device does not have any textured back since this is pure smooth metal. The device has a 5.99-inch device and I have to say that out of all the devices with this screen size this one was the easiest to handle. I have small but still this device perfectly fits in my palm. You get a strong grip on this one, there are no textures hands on the back, the back is smooth but it isn’t slippery. The phone is slightly on the heavy side but because of its size. The weight of the phone seems adequate and it is evenly distributed.
At the rear portion, you can see that the dual camera setup has been shamelessly copied from the iPhone X and the fingerprint sensor has been kept right below it in the center. Now, this might just be a matter of taste, but as a control freak, this kills me every time I see it. I mean Xiaomi could have kept the camera in the center to give it a more normalized feel. But No… Trying to mimic the iPhone must have sounded like a good idea.
Anyways, there is volume rockers on the right side, a speaker vent at the bottom, the micro USB charging port followed by the noise canceling microphone and the 3.5mm audio jack. There are a front camera, a call speaker, and front flash and notification led as well.
The rear fingerprint sensor is the smartest thing for this device and it has an extremely quick response. Antenna Design is very standard and nothing noteworthy out there. The edges of the entire body are a little thicker and this should help you against accidentally dropping the phone.
Weighing at around 180 grams, the device weighs slightly higher, but since the device is bigger in size too, the weight is very evenly distributed over the entire body. This is the reason that even though the device is actually heavy, you won’t be able to notice it.
Now talking about the bezels, the device has bezels that are pretty thin. Not the thinnest out there but pretty thin. Now, this is a 2.5D display so the edges are curved and they merge with the back. Now this might be a pure matter of choice but I feel this need addressing, you can see that we have the gold variant here and it has white borders in the front, so when you see this edge, it feels like the phone is divided into two parts the front and the back, but on the black variant, everything is pitch black and it gives a very unified look. Now, this might totally be a matter of taste but I wanted to point this out.
The type of display used in Redmi Note 5 Pro is IPS display with an 18:9 resolution but let me tell you that this has become a benchmark for all IPS displays. With a pixel density of 403 PPI, this is one of the finest displays I have seen in this segment. The colors on the display of Note 5 Pro are vibrant and you will see a tone of warmth in them. the auto brightness sensor is simply beautiful and responds instantly. To incident light, of all the auto brightness sensors I have seen till date, this is one of the quickest.
The phone scores just average when it comes to maximum brightness, I felt that when using it in outdoor conditions in broad daylight, the screen is unable to hold well against the sun. Video playback on this device is a whole new experience in itself, People who are avid media junkies are really going to enjoy this device Now the device has an 18:9 resolution, but since most of the videos available are in 16:9 or 4:3 you will have a black colored border around the videos that your play. Not to worry, just pinch out and the video will fit to screen.
The display quality and viewing angles of Redmi Note 5 Pro are also pretty good. In most general cases you should be able to read the display until at least 135 degrees. Redmi Note 5 Pro display has been secured by Corning Gorilla Glass, we are not really sure which version it is, but I am assuming it is at least version 3. And that should give you a solid defense against drops and scratches. Overall the device does a great job with its display, all forms of media experiences including watching videos and gaming are a delight with this one.
Camera quality of Redmi Note 5 Pro is excellent. First, let’s get the camera specifications down for this one. Redmi Note 5 Pro has a dual camera setup for its rear camera. One of them is a 12 Megapixel shooter with an f/2.2 aperture and the other one is a 5MP shooter with an f/2.0 aperture, you also get a dual led flash that is pretty bright.
Redmi Note 5 Pro camera has many features like HDR, Tilt-shift, Beautify, Straighten, different scenes like Portrait, landscape, night mode, etc. HHT mode is used in low-light to reduce the amount of noise. For video recording, there are features like time-lapse and Slow-motion.
The device uses Samsung and Sony’s image sensors to capture light and that is a great thing for a device in this segment. I was very excited about the camera quality on this device and I have to tell you that Xiaomi has kept its reputation. Here are the daylight camera samples of Redmi Note 5 Pro, it wasn’t particularly sunny but it was partly cloudy and even with those clouds, the device did a beautiful job at capturing real colors. These vehicles were moving while this shot was captured, yet you can see there are no signs of blurring out at all.
Here are some more Camera Samples of Redmi Note 5 Pro.
Camera setting of Redmi Note 5 Pro has a lot of different options. The Electronic image stabilization in Redmi Note 5 Pro is the real charm and I think it’s just beautiful that you can take your phone and capture anything in an instant.
You can see in this shot that the detailing for every element is evident. Usually, when we click shots like these that involve too many similar elements, noise is inevitable, but you can see there is absolutely no noise in this shot and every leaf can be individually identified in this one.
Now talking about the most important camera feature of Note 5 Pro, The portrait mode. So here is a shot from the rear camera in broad daylight that uses the portrait mode. Now, this is a beautiful shot. Xiaomi does a beautiful job of focusing, the background has been beautifully blurred without affecting the subject. Talking about the sharpness of the image, if you zoom just right enough you can even see Rishabh’s pimples.
Portrait shots in artificial lights are equally good. This photo clearly shows the excellent natural color reproduction and sharpness, if you zoom well enough on this one too, you will see he has some white hair. He probably needs some kind of hair color.
Another very beautiful portrait shot that I want to share is with this plant, I mean this is a beautiful shot. Just look at the depth you get. I mean objects in the photo are not closer than they appear, they are how they appear.
The front camera of Redmi Note 5 Pro is another strong point in the device, the device has a 20 MP selfie camera with Sony’s sensor and you get a soft led flash as well.
The front camera performs extremely well and you get real colors here as well. Front camera Portrait shots of Redmi Note 5 Pro is highly detailed and the edges are extremely sharp.
Talking about the video recording, Redmi Note 5 Pro can shoot 4K Videos but you have to install a third-party app for that. Now talking about some shots in artificial light, depending upon the amount of light, the shots vary from good to is this even a photograph.
We have uploaded a lot of camera samples here for Redmi Note 5 Pro.
Redmi Note 5 Pro runs on Snapdragon 636 Processor clocked at 1.8 GHz which is an octa-core CPU. This is apparently the first device with the chipset. GPU used in Redmi Note 5 Pro is Adreno 509 GPU due to which you will be able to smoothly run most heavy games on high graphics settings.
There was absolutely no lag when playing Asphalt 8 on high graphics settings and the entire gaming experience was smooth as butter. One of the biggest problems with gaming is that the pausing and resuming the game is usually a pain for any device but the device handles it like a pro.
AnTuTu Benchmark score of Redmi Note 5 Pro is 112616 which is much better than Mi Max and Redmi Note 3.
So, there isn’t much to talk about in terms of performance, the device will run anything you throw at it. The strong performance coupled with the great display gives a perfect media experience. So full marks there.
Redmi Note 5 Pro runs on Xiaomi’s own custom skin called MIUI. You get android version Nougat and MIUI 9 with this device. There is an MIUI 9.5 Beta version available for Redmi Note 5 Pro. And there is news that MIUI 10 Update will be available for Redmi Note 5 Pro till November 2018. Till then you can enjoy MIUI 10 Beta update for Redmi Note 5 Pro.
The UI is extremely straightforward and easy to use, there is no app drawer like Stock android so all the apps that you install can be found on the home screen itself. You can watch an In-Depth review of MIUI 9 and its comparison with EMUI here. (Read more about EMUI vs MIUI)
Many of the basic apps have been provided by MIUI. You get a file manager, a Music player, Note taking apps and with the infrared sensor in the device, you also get a Remote-Control app to control your devices.
There is no bloatware in the device and it is a clean system, you get some of Microsoft office suite apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Skype but you can uninstall all of them if you don’t like them.
The device allows for a lot of customization with its inbuilt theme manager. You can choose from a wide variety of themes, wallpapers, ringtones, and fonts. Now there are too many features in MIUI that you usually don’t get in these other phones with stock Android. Some of the features of this phone that you might find useful are.
The read mode, which acts as a blue light filter and protects your eyes when using the device for long hours in low light conditions. You get this Second space feature which acts as a second user account on your device. The dual apps feature lets you clone apps so you can run 2 instances of the same application at the same time. The one-handed mode lets you shrink the viewport of the device so you can use the device with just one hand.
You can share files and apps with other users that have a Xiaomi device using MI drop and the security center that lets you control various security aspects of your phone and even clear junk files and scan your devices for viruses.
