Design and build:
Vivo V5 Plus launched in February 2017 in India started shipping both in online and offline stores, the first impression of any user will be that it looks like it’s heavily inspired by the iPhone 7 and it really is. The curved metallic back with U-type antenna strips and even the bottom speaker grille is almost identical. The design, which may feel like a rip-off, but it does add a premium look & feel to the device. It has a metal design with metal back and display is protected by a Corning gorilla glass v5.
At the top it’s completely plain, on the left side it has volume buttons and on the right, it has power button along with sim card tray. All the buttons are made of metal and have a nice tactile feel to them. The phone supports two nano SIMs.
This phone doesn’t support for expandable storage. But to trade that off Vivo V5 is packing massive 64GB storage within this price range.
Phone feels a bit heavy at 158 grams compared to its predecessor but has a thickness of only 7.2 mm which is one of the slimmest phone so far launched this year, it feels comfortable to hold and does not feel slippery at all. The Vivo V5 Plus only comes in gold colour, while the Vivo V5 come with also grey colour option.
At the bottom, we have the audio jack, microphone, micro USB charging port and the speaker. And unlike most phones, we have a speaker and audio jack at the bottom.
Coming to the screen, it has 5.5 inch Full HD IPS display. Display is bright and vivid, the colours pop right out of the screen because of 401 PPI. It may look like the phone is water proof at first but vivo doesn’t explicitly claims it. The screen is protected with corning gorilla glass v5 which takes on the OnePlus 3T’s marks in terms of display durability. The screen is capacitive touch and supports multi-touch.
The overall screen to body ratio is what we would expect in any other phones of about 74%.
The device is powered by 3055 mAh power battery. Battery life is pretty good even when continuous web browsing and it can definitely last you a day. Vivo V5 plus does support fast charging and the battery is not replaceable.
On the front, it has dual camera 20 + 8 megapixel camera with f 2.0 aperture and on the rear it has a 16 megapixel Exmor -R CMOS sensor with face detection, autofocus and an LED flash. The front 20MP helps in capturing detailed selfie and the other 8 MP camera helps in generating depth effect with blurred background. The rear camera is not that bad as compared to the front but it manages to capture good low light images. Despite having the highest MP rear camera but when compared to the other rival phones like Oppo A57, Coolpad 1 or its predecessor the picture quality is not any superiorly different.
Front cameras are the USP of this phone. Camera performance is in fact good, focusing speeds are average. Camera does come with various shooting modes including Auto HDR, Slow-mo, time lapse, etc. You can also customize the ISO, exposure to suit your photography style. Vivo V5 plus also supports 4K video recording and playback @ 30fps.
The smartphone runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor with speed of 2Ghz, paired with a 4GB RAM. That indeed helps it breeze past heavy-duty graphic games. And yes, they look lovely and crisp on the Full-HD screen, protected by Gorilla Glass 5. It also comes with Adreno 506 GPU, and 64GB internal storage.
It has all the basic sensors including compass and gyroscope sensors, and OTG support but it lacks features like FM radio and NFC reader. And it is also using conventional micro USB 2.0
Nowadays most phones come with a fingerprint scanner and it is as fast as other flagships. The fingerprint scanner sits on top of the home button.
For the price in comparison with other retail as well as online sold phones it offers good level of performance with no heating issues it does a good job with gaming too.
Vivo V5 plus runs a heavily modified version of Android marshmallow 6.0.1 called Funtouch OS 3.0.
User interface looks clean and a very good copy of an iPhone. Obviously, this phone can’t stand a chance against OnePlus 3T, in terms of performance but it offers you some unique things like a dual selfie camera, and a very premium looking design. But it feels like it is overpriced as compared to other competitor phones with similar functionality.
When compared to competitors like OnePlus3T, Oppo A57, and Moto G5 plus, it is definitely a very expensive phone at 24000 for the performance it provides.
The entire experience with Vivo V5 plus was smooth and good but if you are someone who loves taking selfie and have some spare bucks to spend, you can try definitely this one.
