Details about Samsung - M20

We’ve been hearing about Samsung planning to hit the reset button in the budget section for quite some time now, the debut offerings under its new strategy come in the form of the Samsung Galaxy M10 and Samsung Galaxy M20. Replacing its former budget and mid-tier Galaxy J and On series with the “M” range which is fairly squared at millennials.

Samsung Galaxy M20 | Samsung's first Made in India Smartphone

Samsung Is here with its much-hyped M series. This is the first line up of phones that come under Samsung’s “Made In India”  initiative. Samsung’s Galaxy M series is “Millennials” aimed line of smartphones. And  Incidentally, this is the first time Samsung has adopted a notch on its phones.

Samsung M20
Galaxy M20 starts at an affordable price tag of Rs 10,990 going up to Rs 12,990, packs in features like dual rear cameras and a ‘u’ shaped “Infinity V” notch well that’s what Samsung calls it.

Samsung Galaxy M20 also comes with a Type-C USB port, something that the manufacturers have started offering in the budget phone this year, it’s good to see Samsung at the forefront

The fingerprint sensor at the back of the phone was sometimes bit inconvenient and a bit slower compared to its competitor.

The performance of the Galaxy M20 is powered by Exynos 7904 processor, which supposed to have a similar performance to Snapdragon 620. But in my daily usage, I felt UI quite heavy, bogging down the phone a bit

The usage doesn’t that feel that snappy compare to phones at same price bracket. You can check our speed test of the phone in below video with a comparison to Redmi Note 6 Pro.

In our benchmarking test, Samsung M20 scored around 108034 on An tutu benchmark which puts it in line with what is expected from phones in this price range.

The display looks fine with great viewing angles. The display is vibrant and bright enough outdoors. The phone is almost bezels hence contact on edge can result in phantom touches making the screen unresponsive sometimes. Samsung M20 comes with a Wide Vine L1 certification for streaming true HD videos on Netflix, Amazon Prime.

Gaming:

Coming to playing PUBG on this Samsung M20, this phone isn’t exactly for PUBG gamers. We faced loading problems, random lag, and heating issues while gaming. Although there shouldn’t be any problem playing casual light games.
Samsung’s  UI 9.5 has been customized for the notch display. closer in design and look to the newer One UI.
But with this new UI, comes a new line of issues. For e.g.,  I couldn’t find the option to hide notch in the settings. There is random news on the lock screen in the facade of promotional ads. Popup promotion of Samsung apps in the notification panel. Even though these can be easily solved or disabled it is definitely an annoyance and not expected from a company like Samsung.
Samsung has added the option of Face Recognition, which worked fine in my use case. And the notch animation is also cool.

Camera:

Coming to the camera we weren’t truly impressed by the camera overall. But the photos we took looked decent enough for the price range. The photos on Samsung M20 look natural when you are working with better lighting. The colors are pleasing, and there is no noticeable bleeding even with brighter colors. The wide angle shot works and allows you to fit more into the frame but quality takes a hit.

I had some issues with the selfie camera, the portrait mode or the live focus mode only worked on faces and not on objects. I found beauty mode a bit too aggressive even when it was off. The selfie camera lacks details on the shots. In low-light the rear camera of the Galaxy M20 is underwhelming as well. Photos lose details and the images are not sharp enough. But then at this price point, most cameras struggle in low-light performance.

Final Verdict:

Should you buy the Samsung Galaxy M20?
M20 offers a decent performance for its price has a big battery, overall design, and a vibrant display although the camera and User interface could have been better. We would say hold off on buying M20 for now and wait for Redmi Note 7 to launch in India.
