Micromax’s subsidiary company Yu is back with its new budget phone called Yureka Black. This phone is exclusively available to buy from Flipkart and is also priced very aggressively to compete with Xiamoi’s Redmi Note 4. Can it take the crown of the best budget phone? Let’s find it in our review.
Comparing Yureka Black with Redmi Note 4 would make sense as Xiaomi phones are creating a lot of buzz from its flash sale available only online and the same can be said for Yu’s line up if we look at the history of Yureka phones.
Both the phones are priced at a roughly same price but if you buy Yureka Black you’ll get more storage and more RAM.
Design and Build Quality:
The phone has a beautiful sheen black design. In terms of design, when compared with its peers, Yureka black actually looks better than Redmi 4, Redmi 4A and the latest Moto C series budget phones. The Yureka Black sports an all-black design and is available in two Black color variants. The Chrome Black, which has the high-gloss finish, and the Matte Black, giving it a grungy, earthy feel. The smartphone also features a metallic body that does look premium and strong from all sides.
On the front, the smartphone has a 5-inch full-HD screen protected with 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3. While the side bezels are thin, the top and bottom bezels are thick. The home button is at the bottom which works as a fingerprint reader and there are no capacitive keys anymore. The home button doesn’t support swipe gestures so the only option You’re left is to use on-screen navigation keys.
The back of the phone is curved and the silver antenna lines give the phone a superior quality look. The phone feels lighter and fits perfectly in hand due to its compact size. The major advantage of this compact design is, the screen with Full HD resolution looks very sharp with high-density PPI of 441. This is the same Pixel density we get in google pixel smartphone.
The power button and volume rocker keys are on the right of the phone and hybrid sim slot is on the left. The headphone jack is placed at the top and micro USB is at the bottom along with loudspeakers. We see two speaker grilles on either side of USB port but only one of them is a speaker and another one a microphone.
In the camera segment, we found that it’s actually better than Redmi 4. It has a 13MP rear camera that can record full HD videos at 30 fps. And the photos are sufficiently good but when compared to its competitors in this price range, you’d be a bit disappointed as other phones are capable of capturing better pictures. The front camera is 8 MP and comes with a selfie flash. The camera also supports various shooting modes including beauty mode, Wide selfie, HDR and smile shot. The only thing that I don’t like on this phone is its slower shutter speed, photos are noisy and motion blur.
Performance and Hardware:
Coming to the Hardware specifications the Yureka Black runs on Snapdragon 430 Processor which is not very fast as we expected to be in such a good-looking phone but there isn’t any noticeable lag during gaming or during the day to day work. We tried playing high-end graphics games like Asphalt 8 with max graphics settings and noticed no lag or heating issues during gameplay. Yureka Black is also packing massive 4GB of RAM, sorting lag issues if any, to some extent.
The storage option is flexible in this phone as it comes with 32GB internal storage and is expandable up to 64GB via hybrid SD card slot. There is no other bigger storage option available as of right now.
Yureka has decent battery size of 3000mAh. And takes less time to charge it completely. The phone can almost last up to a day or two if you are not a heavy phone user or else you may wanna find a charger in the middle of the day. In our usage experience, the phone lasted a full day on 50% charge with normal usage. Even though it packs small battery but lasts longer due to better performance management and no heating issues
Yureka Black comes with a simple UI and the phone runs on Android marshmallow 6.0.1 out of the box. There are some of the hood improvements done by Micromax and supports smart actions and gestures like wake or lock on double tap of a screen. And the rumors say that the Nougat update for this phone is in test phase which is relieving for now.
Claims are also being made that it’s copied phone but so what? Overall Yureka Black is a complete package. Since the phone is available to buy for everyone unlike other phones like Redmi Note 4 which are still only available to buy from flash sale. So, we have to agree that it’s a win over them.
Performance wise this is not the phone you want but if you are looking for an upgrade with a pocket of budget size then you can definitely buy this phone.
