Yu is a subsidiary company of Micromax Informatics which was formed in 2014 which was a collaboration between Cyanogen Inc and Micormax Informatics Limited. Yu has launched the phone with a plan to gain market share in the budget segment which is currently ruled by the Chinese handset makers. Yu markets this phone with a tag line “All that I need. Nothing that I don’t”. Under the hood, the phone comes with some notable features like Gorilla glass screen protection, an HD display with a customised version of Android Nougat.
Yu has launched the phone, Yu Yunique 2, with a plan to gain market share in the budget segment which is currently ruled by the Chinese handset makers. There are some of under the hood improvements, the phone comes with some notable features like Gorilla glass screen protection, an HD display with a customized version of Android Nougat. This phone can be a tough competitor to Moto C Plus, they both are both priced around Rs. 6-7,000.
This new entry-level smartphone was launched last week exclusively on Flipkart. It appears to be a promising budget smartphone, but is it a true value for money smartphone? Let us find out.
The Yunique 2 is priced at 6,000 rupees which is 1,000 rupees cheaper than the Moto C plus but both the phones come with the same display attributes and battery size.
The frame and body are made up of plastic, the display is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. The removable back frame is made up of plastic from the inside and metal from the outside. The metal back has a textured pattern which gives a nice grip. The loudspeaker grille is on the back which blocks the audio when the device is resting flat on the surface. This device is not thin especially when compared to budget Redmi phone but I don’t get the reason for a huge camera bump.
The power button on the right which is jagged just like the Moto C plus and the volume rocker is just above it. The buttons on the phone can be reached easily with one hand. The headphone jack along with micro USB port is on the top while the microphone is at the bottom. The voice recording quality was good.
It offers a 5-inch display with 1280 X 720 pixels screen resolution and a pixel density 294 PPI. The viewing in different light conditions is decently good. The same can be said about the color reproduction and attention to details.
The touch response is not good. It sometimes stutters and has to touch twice on the screen. You won’t be happy about the screen touch response much.
The phone is VoLTE compatible on both the sims but one at a time. There are some nice additions to smart actions & gestures from Yu, Smart actions like picking the phone by just placing it near your ear to answer automatically and double to wake. And some patterned gesture on the screen to open apps like camera and music apps.
Yunique 2 features a 13MP camera with support for autofocus and a LED flash while the front features a 5MP selfie shooter. The default camera app doesn’t come with many features. Beauty mode, HDR mode, and other basic features are missing. Video recording can be done at 720p @30 fps. The camera doesn’t support panorama and playback of FULL HD videos are also not supported. In our experience, the images were pretty good compared to other Chinese phones in this budget segment. The colors were accurate, daylight pictures were properly lit but in low light condition, it struggles to capture even a decent photo.
Gaming on this device is not good but low graphics games ran smoothly, so we tested it with Asphalt 8 on low graphics setting and surprisingly it ran without much lag. But performance wise it’s okay and can be used as a daily driver phone if you are on a tight budget.
Considering the price tag, Yunique 2 ships with basic sensors like ambient light sensors, accelerometer sensor and proximity sensor unlike Moto C plus which only ships with an accelerometer sensor. The phone supports OTG but does not have a fingerprint reader. So you have to rely on pattern and PIN for security.
In the battery department, Yunique 2 didn’t do well with only 2,500 mAh battery. Though it managed to last just a day with normal usage and web browsing.
The only other thing good about this phone apart from the camera is the fact that it comes with Android nougat 7.0 out of the box. The phone runs on MediaTek quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM whereas Samsung Galaxy J2 offers only 1GB of RAM with a higher price. It has 16GB internal storage which is expandable up to 64GB.
So coming to the conclusion, the Yunique 2 is a competent entry-level smartphone which offers a decent camera, good display, and latest operating system. Though the fingerprint sensor is missing from the phone, the smartphone will not create any issues in performance on regular operations. You can easily manage the multitasking and can take decent images from the rear camera and your day-to-day requirements will be easily catered by the Yunique 2.
This phone is a nice option for the users who want to upgrade to a smartphone. Though you cannot expect anything extraordinary from the smartphone, still it is a good alternative to phones like Redmi 4A, Moto C plus. And this phone also steals the crown of the cheapest phone running Android nougat from Moto C Plus at 6000 rupees. So this all was about the Yunique 2 let me know what you think about the device
