So we have the Redmi Note 6 pro here with and us and finally after using it for some days, here we have detailed review of the device. So let us begin by first talking about the design.
The phone comes in 2 configs 4 GB and 6 GB ram variant, 6gb is a bit of overkill for the processor it’s running on they could have gone for more storage option which makes more sense in the budget segment as the phone come’s with a hybrid slot.
Phones come in Blue, Black, Red and Pink color variants, Got great color option here. you can choose any according to your preference.
The device has an Aluminium back panel and the Frame from top to bottom part is plastic. Phone has a bit of heft to it due to larger 4000mAh battery weighing in at around 182g with slight popped out screen sitting on top of the body with a bend from the back coming towards the inside giving it a Nice grip and about right for one-handed use. Although some users that are used to phones similar to this might find the phone slippery for a few days you will get used to it after a few days of usage. And anyways there is silicon back cover included in the box with the device so you can use that as well.
The notch consists of two 20mp + 2mp front-facing camera, an earpiece, and the proximity sensor. A slightly thick outline runs around the entire display, making the notch appear wider than it actually is. The edges, they are rounded in the comers since the device has a unibody design, the rounded edge in the bottom merges with a sizable chin which may look shabby in comparison to premium smartphones but at its price point there isn’t much to complain about
The 12MP + 5MP Dual Primary Camera has a bit of camera bump but the phone doesn’t wobble much when kept on a table so we didn’t mind it much. Dual tone flash is placed between the two camera module protected by the glass which I hope is gorilla but is probably not but in contrast to that the front panel is Protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 it can protect you from minor drops and scratches.
There is a fingerprint scanner on the back which is fast and accurate placed in the ideal location.
The Power/Volume buttons are tactile and clicky. Headphone jack present, Ir blaster present, and very useful in disparity to other manufactures belief. The oleophobic coating also does a great job in repelling fingerprints and even minor splashes of water.
Coming to the display
It has around 81.39 % screen to body ratio on a 6.26-inch IPS display with full Hd resolution.
But the notch is pretty noticeable they could have gone with teardrop display but skipping on the sensors would be sad because when we tested the display in outdoor conditions the auto brightness sensor was simply amazing. It is extremely sensitive and responses very quickly to the incident light on the screen although the phone scores just average when it comes to maximum brightness, I felt that when using it in outdoor conditions in broad daylight, the screen is unable to hold well against direct sunlight.
Video playback on this device is not perfect as of now. Even though Note 6 Pro has a 19:9 aspect ratio, most of the apps, especially video streaming platforms, are still using the 18:9 aspect ratio. Most of the videos you play will have blank space around the edges. So just pinch out to zoom full screen into the video. i.e On YouTube when you zoom in the right side edges round off but the notch side isn’t rounded off and left barren not even fully touching the notch at the front which makes it feel like an incomplete watching experience it’s not a deal breaker but definitely an annoyance if your avid video streamer (which mind you, doesn’t play content at Full HD on Netflix)
The space on the left-hand side of the notch does not show any notification icons of apps, instead, you get notification bubbles on the individual app. This may not be the best implementation, but at the same time, it’s not like it could accommodate more than three-four app notification icons any way.
Viewing from distance the video may seem more sharper than near your face as It’s an full hd stretched Screen with pixel density of 403 ppi so overall it’s a nice display slightly better than its predecessors with good viewing angle’s but there is a slight bleed from the notch which I don’t know if it’s evident on other phone’s or not but on this device it was visible. display look’s its best in the home screen or when I am using any of the notch friendly apps that’s when device seems to take advantage of the notch design
The camera is the segment the phone manufacturers are basing on their hopes on well surprisingly it is better. An incremental update from its predecessor
The Redmi Note 6 Pro has a dual-camera setup on the back The primary camera unit is a 12 MP with an f/1.9 aperture complemented by a 5 MP f/2.2 depth sensor. The reason why this is an incremental upgrade is that the primary sensor is now theoretically capable of taking in more light when compared to its predecessor’s f/2.2 aperture lens and boy does it make a difference.
So we captured some shots in the day, and the photos were quite crisp. although noise could be noticed when zoomed in after taking the pictures, The rear camera does a beautiful job in capturing real colors and does not try to over saturate the image. In potrait mode the depth effect is a little hit or miss more of the hit than miss
It does ideal job of blurring out the background no problem’s there AI seems to be working in the background which I personally haven’t noticed making any noticeable change as such but I guess the picture does come out a little better when the Ai is on! even the front work’s similarly takes good selfie’s does beautify a little bit even when off
Now talking about the video recording, This device does not have an optical image sensor but it does have electronic image stabilization. Also we have the following front camera video sample so you can get the idea of it quality.
MIUI 10 also adds a few image processing gimmicks like letting you change the amount of background blur on a portrait shot and the shape of the bokeh.
The video quality is top notch and crisp, the EIS has done a great job even though the subject was moving a lot.
Also, I won’t say that the audio noise didn’t exist, but it was fairly low. We had done a similar test in our first impressions and i have to say that the best part about the sound capturing is that the subject’s voice is in the focus at all times.
So the camera does a great job but it totally fails you during the night but to be very honest, that has been the case with almost every Xiaomi mid-range device so it’s not a surprise.
Over all the camera performance is fairly decent .
Software & Performance
Note 6 pro comes with MiUi 10 based on Android Oreo 8.1 out of the box even though 9.1 Android Pie is available in given the history of Mi’s OS updates, MIUI based Pie on Redmi device will take a while.
Device has an big 4000 mAh battery which can actually last to about 2day’s in no to moderate usage, You do have Quick Charging Support here although Quick charger is not provided in the box and is retailed separately. It take’s close to 2 hours to juice the battery up through the standard 5V 2A charger in the box .
Phone has the same processor as its predecessor The Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636 processor while the competitors are moving to Snap dragon 660. Still, Snapdragon 636 is a good chipset for normal Day to Day task’s. But The phone isn’t for mobile gamer’s. The GPU adreno 509 isn’t powerful enough to cope up with play graphic intensive games such as PUBG and Asphalt. In order to play, you will have to lower your in game graphic’s to run at playable frame rate’s. The game screen got covered due to the notch which doesn’t result in a good gaming experience. The battery drain while playing heavy games was also considerable. For reference, playing an hour of PUBG on Wi-Fi drained the battery by about 22 percent.
Apps stay in memory thank’s to 4 gb/6gb of ram, You multitasking between 3,4 apps will be a breeze. Also, AI seems to be the jargon for Xiaomi even this year. The Ai working in the background is supposed to prioritize apps which you use often to open up faster. We did saw some apps opening up faster & Certain App’s In memory for a longer period of time.
Mi also brought in Gesture’s on the device which are certainly not fluid and intuitive as iOS, but they tried to make it as close to iOS as possible. keeping gesture action same as iOS. It’s not badly implemented but some animation do feel off. You swipe right from the edge of the display to trigger the back button and swipe left from the right edge of the display to move forward. Swiping up from the bottom takes you home and holding on to the swipe up gesture takes you to the recent apps window. Getting used to gestures is bit hard but you can get used to it.
The speaker on the phone is loud but is nothing too spectacular in terms of quality. The audio doesn’t distort at higher volumes, But vibrates the whole body to the point you can feel it at the top of the phone too
We ran a bunch of benchmark test’s here is the result
Reception was good and Cellular call quality was clear and audible. The earpiece has also been placed well, with a wider earpiece. Audio quality through the headphone jack was also pleasing nothing to complain about here.
Phone in contrast to other’s opinion I think looks decent and premium the problem is the design isn’t much different from Redmi Note 5 pro but if this is your first device in this new notch line up of phone’s you won’t mind the design.
Camera is the part the phone manufacturers and us were basing the hopes on and well surprisingly it did surpass our expectations. Camera on the Redmi note 6 pro is best in the segment of 15000 Rs as of now, But Is it an incremental update from its predecessor I would say No, just for the basis of camera and note 6 pro is not worth the upgrade.
Processor still the same which is fine for daily task’s but will not be enough for gaming. phone is not for gamer’s. Battery Life is awesome can easily last day or two with moderate to heavy usage. Overall I Think if you are someone Looking for a phone under 15000 segment hold yourself for a while because Realme U1 has similar specs and can turn to better overall package than Redimi note 5 pro.
