Redmi Note 5 Review: Great Performance but Average Camera Quality

Reviewed by Rishabh Kandari - Published on 03-05-2018

So we have the Redmi Note 5 here with and us and finally after using it for some days, here we have detailed review of the device. So let us begin by first talking about the design. So we have the Redmi Note 5 here with and us and finally after using it for some days, here we have detailed review of the device.

So first of all here we have the Redmi Note 5 here, the 4gb Ram 64 Gb storage version. The phone comes in 2 colors, Black and Gold, here we have Black variant as you can see. So the device has an all-metal body with metal back as well. The entire back side is smooth and does not have any textured patterns for improving grip. This is the reason that some users that are used to phones with texture back might find the phone slippery for a few days but you will get used to it after a few days of usage. And anyways Xiaomi gives you a silicon back cover with the device so you can use that as well.Initially when i was using the device i found it was too big for my hands but again, i got used to it in just 2 to 3 days and now its not that big of an issue. The corners are rounded and i found that the all four corners are slightly thicker than the rest of the edge. This is of great help when you drop your phone as the thick corners can take the impact. Now talking about the edges, they are rounded as well and since the device has a unibody design, the rounded edges merge with the back beautifully and this makes the phone feel more thin and compact when you hold it.The phone comes with a finger print sensor and like most other Xiaomi phones, it is placed at the rear, below  the camera. Now i feel that since this device is already big in size, the fingerprint sensor should have been on the front. Even though i have gotten used to this device, unlocking via fingerprint does take some effort as i have to hold the device properly before i can reach the finger print sensor. So it is something that i am still struggling with. The antenna lines run through the top and the bottom of the device and this makes it look like the device is separated into 3 parts on the back but they are just antenna lines.Weighing at around a 180 grams, the device weighs slightly higher, but since the device is bigger in size too, the weight is very evenly distributed over the entire body. This is the reason that even though the device is actually heavy, you won’t be able to notice it.The device does not have touch capacitive buttons which is great but the fact that there is a thick border around the display at the bottom which occupies almost the same space as touch capacitive buttons would do disappoints a bit. So it kind of beats its own purpose.

18:9 is the new trend for 2018 and the Redmi Note 5 packs the same in its 5.99 inch display. The display has a resolution of 2160 by 1080.
The colors on the display are quite vibrant and warm. The display gives you a pixel perfect experience. We tested the display in outdoor conditions and I have to tell you the auto brightness sensor is simply amazing. It is extremely sensitive and responses very quickly to the incident light on the screen. The phone scores just average when it comes to maximum brightness, I felt that when using it in outdoor conditions in broad daylight, the screen is unable to hold well against the sun.
I have already spoken about the auto brightness sensor which is extremely efficient, And the device also has the Night Mode which is basically a red light filter for your display that can protect your eyes from the harmful blue light in your display. This filter is an amazing feature and it is one of the many interesting features in MIUI and we will talk more about that in the later part of the video.
But apart from that, the bezels around the display are quite thin but I feel they could be thinner. However, they do not take your focus away from the display at any point so it is not something to worry about.
Video playback on this device is kind of a new experience. Since the device has an 18:9 resolution, but most of the videos available are in 16:9 or 4:3. So Most of the videos you play will have blank space around the edges. So just pinch out to zoom full screen into the video.
Now talking about the viewing angles, so the IPS LCD screen used in the display provides a good range of viewing angles and I found that you can get a perfect view till around 135 degrees but beyond that, it kind of gets tough to see what’s up on the display.
A lot of you were also confused about what glass protection the device was using. So the device uses Gorilla Glass for protection, though it hasn’t been mentioned as to what version of Gorilla Glass the device is using, it can protect you from minor drops and scratches. You can play Full HD videos on this device and with a pixel density of 403 ppi, you will enjoy your viewing experience. Overall the device does a great job with its display.

Before we begin, I want to clear that many users are confused whether this one has the dual camera setup. The answer is NO, it doesn’t.The camera UI is pretty simple and straight forward.  You get the Flash enable/disable option on the left-hand corner. The Beauty mode icon is to the right. You get the secondary camera switch,  an option to choose from photo or video mode. The capture button. The recent photos and there are several filters and overlays available that you can try here.Various camera modes and options are available from the options menu. The settings icon here gives you a list of configurations.
The RedmiNote 5 has a 12 Megapixel rear camera with a f/2.2 aperture.
So we captured some shots in the day, and the photos were quite crisp. The rear camera does a beautiful job in capturing real colors and it does not try to insert fake colors in the image.
Camera performance in the night was extremely disappointing. There was immediate noise visible in low light photos and they were pretty dark. The dual led flash really helps when you are looking into capturing individual elements. Same shots were exponentially better with the flash than without it.
But when you are looking into capturing a wider area during the night, especially the ones with sources of lights, you will be disappointed again. So the camera fails miserably during the night.
Next talking about the selfie camera, we get a 5 Megapixel shooter with a soft led flash. And the front cam takes some beautiful shots. It has a great focus and I the photos was natural just like the rear camera. You also have a beauty mode that the guy in the photo used a lot to hide his insecurities. The beauty mode works really well I mean if people like these can look good, this camera can do anything. Now talking about the video recording, This device does not have an optical image sensor but it does have electronic image stabilization. Also, we have the following front camera video sample so you can get the idea of its quality.
The video quality is top notch and crisp, the EIS has done a great job even though the subject was moving a lot. Also, I won’t say that the audio noise didn’t exist, but it was fairly low. We had done a similar test in our first impressions and I have to say that the best part about the sound capturing is that the subject’s voice is in the focus at all times.

So the camera does a great job but it totally fails you during the night but to be very honest, that has been the case with almost every Xiaomi mid-range device so it’s not a surprise. Over all the camera performance is fairly decent.

Performance and Gaming:

Now talking about the most important thing in this device. The device runs on the octacore Snapdragon 625 chipset which was also earlier used on its predecessor, the Redmi Note 4. The device gives a strong gaming performance. I did not face any kind of lags while playing Asphalt. The gameplay was smooth and there were no frame drops at all  We have already spoken about how good the display quality is and I played for around half an hour and the device does not heat. But I would say that it does get a little warm. But at no point will you notice that it gets unbearable. It’s just a little warm and it’s quite acceptable. Most other games we played were smooth and we could play all games at high graphics settings with zero lag. So gaming is a great experience on this device and it gets full marks there.

The device runs on MIUI which is a custom Android skin created by Xiaomi for their devices. The devices get MIUI 9 out of the box and runs on top of Android Nougat version 7.1.2. The UI is pretty simple and easy to use, There is no app drawer like Stock android so all the apps that you install are just there on the screen.
Many of the basic apps have been provided by MIUI. You get a file manager, a Music player, a Note taking app and with the infrared sensor in the device, you also get a Remote Control app to control your devices.

There is no bloatware in the device and it is a clean system, You get some of Microsofts office suite apps such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and Skype but you can uninstall all of them if you don’t like them. The same goes for Amazon, Hungama and WPS office as these apps are promotional apps and not a part of the system you can uninstall them in a single click.
There are hundreds and thousands of customization options available for this device as the themes app lets you select from a wide range of themes, wallpapers, ringtones and even fonts.
Nextly moving on to the settings menu, the settings menu offers a lot of featured integrated with androids normal settings. There is this feature called the second space which lets you create a second user account on your phone itself. This is really helpful when you wish to keep your personal and official data and apps separate.
We also have this feature for dual apps so you can use 2 instances of the same app on your device, so if you are someone who wishes to use more than one WhatsApp account on the same device. Then this is for you. Also, since the display is really big,  Xiaomi has given us a one-handed mode which on enabling can make the display shrink into a space of 3.5 to 4.5 inches. So anytime you nee to text using just one hand, this feature might be what you are looking for.
Finally, to make your life easy, the phone offers a lot of gestures and shortcuts. You could launch the camera, take a screenshot and much more by defining the gestures. All of these gestures are based on the hardware buttons, so I guess there is no support for touch gestures. Why though?

The device packs a 4000 mAh battery with a standard micro USB port. The charger supplied with this one is an average 5V/2A charger so we don’t have support for fast charging there. It takes approximately 2 to 2 hours 15 minutes to charge the device from 0-100. Now let’s discuss the battery life. The battery life came quite shocking to me. I was expecting the display to consume a lot of battery but that didn’t quite happen. The display did not show signs of any over the top battery consumption and I watched a 2-hour movie using just 10% of battery. Here are some statistics after a day full of usage you can see that I used the device for 22 hours of mixed usage and i am still left with 32% battery. My usage comprised of approximately 8 hours of screen on time and 90 minutes of Volte calls. The device gave a beautiful standby consumption where it used just 2 -3% of the battery for a standby of 7 hours. Sweet isn’t it.
So the device should give you a full day of power usage and up to a day and a half on normal usage.
[Other features]The device has a fingerprint sensor and it’s not the fastest I have seen but its pretty quick. Nextly talking about the sound in this device. There is a speaker at the bottom on the right side and the sound is loud enough. The speaker held good in most everyday noisy environments so that should suffice. Nextly I wanna talk about the call quality which is beautiful. The device is doing a great work with noise cancellation in its microphone and the speaker at the top is also loud enough which will give you a great calling experience. Also, I found no heating problems when using VolTE for calls that lasted more than half an hour.

So, should you buy this phone?

This is a great device with a premium design, You get a fairly decent camera performance but low light shots are a tragedy. The phone is strong enough to hold against heavy games on full graphics mode with zero lag. So the device offers a smooth and strong gaming experience. The display is the major USP of this device and you will love it. It is one of the finest displays I have ever seen in this range. The battery life lasts a day with heavy usage and you could stretch up to a day and a half with mixed usage.

Now the most important ques tion. Should you buy this phone. The one that is in my hand is a pure waste of money. This device costs 12000 rupees for the 4GB Ram 64 GB version but the Redmi note 5 pro comes for 14 thousand rupees. So it is totally worth spending that extra 2000 for the pro version. But if you are running short on a budget then I would suggest you go with the Redmi note 5 32 GB version that comes for 10 thousand. That is a far better buy than this 64 GB version that is in my hand right now. The 3 Gig of RAM that you get there should suffice for most of your tasks including heavy gaming and you can buy an expandable storage card for far less amount.
