Redmi 5 Review: Decent Budget Smartphone with one Flaw

Reviewed by Rishabh Kandari - Published on 05-04-2018

So Redmi 5 was launched a few days back and since we have had the device for quite some time now, here in this video let us do a full review of the Xiaomi Redmi 5.

Redmi 5 Review

So the Xiaomi Redmi 5 is a successor to the Redmi 4 which was launched last year in the month of May. Let us first quickly have a look at the specs of this device. So the device has a 5.7-inch screen with 2.5d curved edges. The display is an IPS LCD with gorilla glass protection. You get a resolution of 1440 by 720 pixels in an aspect ratio of 18:9. The device runs on the latest Snapdragon 450 chipset with 8 Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.8 GHz and the Adreno 506 GPU. You get 3 memory variants here with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of Storage. 3 GB RAM and 32 GB Storage and 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage.

On the rear, The device has a 12 Megapixel camera with a f/2.2 aperture and a single LED flash. The front camera is a 5 Megapixel shooter with a f/2.0 aperture that can record videos in 1080p and you do get a soft led flashlight for your selfies.

You get a hybrid sim slot and a fingerprint sensor that is mounted on the rear. The device has a 3300 mAh Lithium Polymer battery that is Non-Removable.

The Redmi 5 comes with the Gold and the black color variants and you get an option for 3 memory based variants. There is a 2/16 Gb variant priced at 8 thousand, a 3/32 GB variant priced at 9 thousand and finally, a 4/64 GB variant that comes for 11 thousand rupees.

We have the 3GB RAM and 32 GB Storage variant with the black color. So let us begin by discussing the design and build quality of this device so firstly beginning from the back we have the camera placed in the center, the led flash right below it followed by the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

If you have seen the Redmi Note 5 from our earlier videos you will notice that the design is exactly similar to it. Everything else is pretty standard and the device is almost a clone of the Redmi Note 5 from a design perspective.

You get the 3.5 mm audio jack at the top followed by the IR blaster. The right edge houses the volume rockers and power button. There are 2 vents at the bottom out of which the right one is for the speaker and the left one is for the microphone these vents have some kind of a mesh protection that prevents dust from getting inside. You also get a Micro usb 2.0 port for charging the device which is again placed at the bottom. The touch capacitive buttons have been traded for the onscreen buttons but the fact that this thick bottom border is still there is kind of frustrating.

The device has a metallic back and the edges are made of strong plastic, These edges will be really helpful if you drop your phone as they can the impact and protect your device. The antenna design is something that you see on every Xiaomi device. This isn’t something that is very innovating but I have seen it so much that I have actually started liking it.

Now I wanna talk about how the device feels, so this is one of those devices that have a very strange in hand feel. To be honest the device feels like a TV remote. The reason I am saying this is because the device is quite handy when it comes to width. So you can wrap the device with just one hand but the device is fairly tall in length. So I cannot reach all parts of the device with just one hand. So that is something that has been eating me up for some time.

Let us now talk about the display, so the device has a 5.7 inch IPS LCD screen and you get an HD+ display with an aspect ratio of 18:9.
The display is extremely good. The colors feel very much alive. When I watched some videos on the device I found that there was an element of sharpness with the video playbacks, the screen has pretty good brightness levels, not the best out there but pretty bright. and I just wanna share that if you are watching videos on youtube, most of them will be in 16:9 resolution and there will be a black border around the video. Just pinch out to make the video fit to screen.

The auto brightness sensor is a little slow and I often had problems in changing places that had a contrast in lighting conditions. But as they say, Brightness delayed is brightness denied. The sensor works pretty well but it is slow. So its kind of not useful as of now.

Besides that I have no complaints from the display it does a neat job considering the price and let us now move on to the Camera performance.

The device has a 12 Megapixel rear camera with a f/2.2 aperture and it has an led flashlight as well. So let us look at some shots from the rear camera. This shots from the rear camera are very functional. The color capturing and reproduction is accurate but there is no sharpness in the images. Also even though the real colors are there but the image quality is not that great and you can see that the images pixelate as soon as you zoom in even a little. Also as a whole, the images actually look lifeless. The HDR mode on this one was very tricky one you can see these 2 images that we captured with and without the HDR mode. The HDR mode did some good corrections but it wasn’t perfect. You can see that strip of white in the corners of the blue sky.

Now talking about the front camera, The front camera is a 5 Megapixel shooter with a f/2.0 aperture and you get a soft led flash with this one.

The front camera selfies are not exactly bad but they aren’t good either. The front camera images are okay, to be honest, but there is no detailing on the images. Some front camera shots in the artificial lights are even worse where the image isn’t even clear without zooming. Lastly, The front camera can also record videos at a full 1080p so let us have a look at a video sample from the front camera.

The video quality again is not so impressive, Neither did I like the noise reduction.
Even though the place was extremely noisy and we could still hear what he said, the noise reduction could have been better for this price.

So we are Extremely disappointed by the camera quality. And I also want to point out that the image capture is not instant and it takes approximately a full second to capture the image which is not good.

Talking about performance, the device has a Snapdragon 450 chipset which is a successor to the Snapdragon 435 chipset that we had earlier seen in the Redmi 4x.

The device has 8 cores all clocked at 1.8 GHz and these cores are based on the Cortex-A53 so they are low on resources too. The device gets the Adreno 506 GPU which is an upgrade form the 505 GPU that we saw last year in the Redmi 4x.

So firstly we have the benchmark scores from AnTuTu benchmark. The device scores a total of around 70,000 on AnTuTu which is approximately 14000 points more than its predecessor – the Redmi 4. The new CPU in the Redmi 5 seems to be adding a lot of the overall score since it is 7000 points ahead of the Redmi 4 along with the Adreno 506 GPU which is approximately 2500 points ahead of the Adreno 505 from the Redmi 5.

We played the Asphalt 8 airborne on the device and it handled it like a pro. We were running it on the high graphics setting and the device gave us a smooth gameplay. I was expecting that the device would heat up with half an hour of gameplay but that didn’t happen We will be doing a detailed review of the gaming performance soon and I want you guys to hit the notification bell icon so that you never miss an update from us.

Software and UI

The device runs on Android Nougat Version 7.1.2 and it gets Xiaomi’s custom skin called MIUI version 9 with this device. The UI is dead simple and to the point. There is no app drawer like Stock android so all the apps that on your phone can be found on the home screen itself.  Many of the basic apps have been provided by MIUI. You get a file manager, a Music player a Notes taking an app and with the infrared sensor in the device, you also get a Remote Control app to control your devices that have infrared.

There is no bloatware in the device and it is a clean system, You get some of Microsoft’s office suite apps such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and Skype but you can uninstall all of them if you don’t like them. The device allows for a lot of customization with its inbuilt theme manager. You can choose from a wide variety of themes, wallpapers, ringtones, and fonts. You can even merge elements from different themes.

There is this read mode, which acts as a blue light filter and protects your eyes when using the device for long hours in low light conditions. You also actually get this Second space feature which acts like a second user account on your device.

The dual apps feature lets you clone apps so you can run 2 instances of the same application at the same time. The one-handed mode lets you shrink the viewport of the device so you can use the device with just one hand.

You can share files and apps with other users that have a Xiaomi device using MI drop The is an app called the security center that lets you control various security aspects of your phone and even clear junk files and scan your devices for viruses.  I actually am a big MIUI fan because I have been using it for quite some time and they always update their devices with the latest updates and I think its simply great to have so many features out of the box.

Now talking about the battery life, the device has a 3300 mAh battery which is slightly less than other Xiaomi Devices that usually get a 4000 mAh battery.

I used this device for approximately 21 hours as you can see and I was left with 8 % battery. I must have played games for at least 2 hours in total and had my music playing for some 3-4 hours on my headphones.
The standby on this device was great. I think when I slept, the battery was around 62 and I woke up to a 60% battery which is awesome. The Screen on time was 8 hours which is more than enough for a normal user for a day full of mixed usage.

But do not expect anything over a day from this device. We will be doing a few more detailed battery tests and if you wish to watch a video on that do let us know in the comments section below.

Additional Features

Talking about some additional features you get an IR blaster so you can control your Infrared Devices. The fingerprint sensor that has been mounted on the rear is pretty quick as of now but I ‘ve seen in other Xiaomi device that it does slow with time so let’s see how that goes. The volume levels on this device are louder than average so it is loud enough.

The audio quality is great while making Volte calls the microphone does a good noise cancellation and what I really like about the device is that it doesn’t heat up too much. That is one good thing about the device that it is more tolerant to heavy usage and does not heat so quickly. Also when using earphones I found that this device outputs a slightly louder sound and I personally liked it.

Now its time for the verdict, so the Redmi 5 is a decent device at a great price point. The device has a good gaming performance, a decent battery life, a great sound quality and an average camera performance.

Now the question is should you buy this phone? And I would suggest that you do not.

This is a great device but the Redmi note 5 that was launched a couple of weeks back is still out there in the market and it sells its 3 GB variant at 10,000 and I feel that would be a better deal. Also, the 2 GB variant of this device should be ignored coz it’s getting a little tough to use devices with 2 GB of Ram even now and in 6 months it will be even more difficult.

So that was all we had, a little disappointed with the camera so maybe we won’t do a detailed camera review but we will soon be doing a gaming performance review of this device.
