Xiaomi Mi A1 Review

Reviewed by - Published on

This phone has received a very special spot in the history of Mi phones as this is their first Android phone which runs stock android. This phone seems to give a tough competition to the recently launched Moto G5s Plus and Lenovo K8 Note. It is priced between these two phones and is available to buy from Flipkart and mi.com at rupees 15000 only. Apart from the stock android software, what makes this phone special is its dual camera. After the initial impression we took some time to review this phone and here are we after using it for a week now.

Build Design and Screen:

Before we get into camera details lets first start with its built quality and design. It is completely made up of metal and curved at the  sides and as you may already know that this phone also resembles a famous phone, the OP5,  we all can agree that it looks similar to the OP5 design, the same camera structure which OP5 ripped off form iPhone 7 Plus. Mi has just move the flashlight from right to left, the secondary microphone is moved from back to top of the phone near Mi’s iconic IR blaster. The fingerprint is as the back. And almost all other things in phone’s built design is similar to other Redmi phones. The metal body ends in chamfered edges encasing the screen of the phone which is protected by gorilla gl ass 3. The device is slim and feels perfect with matte black metal design. The screen is 2.5D curved which makes it easier to touch the edges of the screen. The phone has capacitive buttons which are backlit.

The display provided in this phone has a 1080p resolution which is 5.5 inch. The screen is not much bright but it gets very dim at night. It also has ambient light sensor which can automatically adjust the screen brightness.  I’ve used the phone in direct sunlight and I find no issue in reading the screen. The viewing angles are great. The color looks similar for any angles. The touch response is also good, except when the screen was little wet in rain. I had some hiccups initially but then worked fine. Overall I liked the screen better than Moto G5s Plus and also the simple design of the front looks premium and feels premium. Overall I’m impressed by this phone design and at the same time it also feels very rigid and strong.

Software & Performance:

It is nice to have a stock android in Xiaomi phones but I actually miss all those MIUI features like 3 finger screenshot and other gestures. One thing I noticed that I can no longer lock apps in recent app items which is one thing I don’t often use but now it’s not there I kind of started to miss it, you know. And I cannot move the google search bar from the top for some unknown reasons I guess that’s with every stock android straight by google. But I wish I could at least resize it so that I can fit the clock at the top. Apart from this issue I like this new stock experience from Mi phones.

It comes with an octa core snapdragon 625 chipset with 4GB of ram. There is plenty of space. It’s a 64GB variant so you can store as many movies and games you like. Speaking of games, the games played very smoothly on high graphic setting. There wasn’t any lag during gameplay or that I noticed while playing. The device does not generate too much heat while gaming or charging.

Fingerprint is pretty lazy in this phone, even though it has got SD625 CPU, sometimes it unlocks quickly and sometimes it takes time I’m not sure what cause it to slow down but it gets the job done without waiting too long and I mean waiting for slightly less than a sec. And this phone packs pretty much all the sensor including the compass navigation sensor.

Though it is running a stock android but Xiaomi has added a some useful features like the IR controller and swipe gestures on fingerprint sensor. You can use it to access the notification center by a simple downward swipe and close it again with an upward swipe. I myself found it using more often. For those who wanted to know the LED notification provided in this phone glows only white.

The IR blaster at the top works flawlessly. I use it to control air conditioner and ceiling fan and even the camera I’m using right now. The addition of IR is always appreciated which is something you don’t get even in most high-end devices.

Coming to the speaker, The audio is decently loud, highs are sharp and lows are also present. This is not the best in its price range but you cannot even complain. I love the sound in earphones. The volume was loud and with good earphones you’ll get the exceptional sound quality in this price.

Xiaomi has provided the latest USB type-c port in this mid-range phone, probably hinting us that the future is here. And to be honest all the smartphone manufacture should accept this change and switch to latest hardware in low budget phones too. The USB type-c speed provides a max 25 MB of write speed and read speed is around 50MBps.

Overall in the software segment the Mi A1 is doing a great job already it is running on latest Android nougat 7.1.2 and the software support from google means, a promised update to Oreo or even Android P in the future

Now let’s talk about the camera, the phone packs two 12 MP cameras at the back and a 5MP camera at the front.

As I said earlier the camera structure is a look alike of OP5 which is not a bad thing but I wish they had made it just like the OP5 with premium built design. The secondary lens at the back is a telephoto lens just the one in OP5 and iPhone 7 plus. It helps you zoom the picture twice without losing any quality.  The phone is also provided with PDAF autofocus while focuses in a blink. Various filters and mode are present in the default camera itself. In fact it is the same camera from the MIUI software. There is beauty mode, group shot, auto HDR and a manual mode.

The video recording is supported up to 4k, time lapse and slo-mo is also supported.

Mi A1 takes good pictures in daylight, the colors are accurate and detailed. Low light images are not bad but noise is present. These are the sample images from Xiaomi Mi A1 that were taken in different lighting condition. The camera quality is fine but what’s annoying is the camera zooms a bit in other apps, so to take the photo, we need to get back a little, and this phone is not idle for taking group selfies because the close up image is too close that you even cannot take a good selfie without pushing your hands too far.

Mi claims it to be a picture perfect dual camera and frankly speaking it is. The depth effect is better than k8 note and g5s plus. The only complain I have is that it does not have any type of stabilization in video so the videos are very shaky and blurry. Overall the camera has a solid performance.
