Moto X4 Battery
The latest offering from Motorola, the Moto X4 turns turn out to be an all-rounder phone. Although this phone doesn’t come cheap considering this is mid-range device, Moto X4 provides a balance between great performance, design and affordability. It offers a glass back with a dual camera set-up and a premium feel in the hand. So after using this phone for about a week now and here’s our full review of Moto X4.
Although the X4 is a part of the widely-popular Moto X family, it is completely different from its predecessors in almost every department.
Starting from its built quality, The phone boasts a premium design with an aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass panes. The glass is very reflective on the back which also attracts much smudges and fingerprint but at the same time the stunning or sterling blue variant’s reflection is so unique. I’m in totally love with it, it almost feel like a mirror, while the black is always is in fashion and that too never goes out of style. While other premium smartphones weighs more towards being a functional device, but this Moto X4 looks a lot like fashion accessory. The camera bump was inevitable but I like the way how Motorola decided to put it, the protrusion doesn’t seem to be an issue, the glass on the camera is fairly scratch resistant and the overall camera structure adds a premium feel to the device. As always and where I prefer it to be, the fingerprint reader is on the front but the capacitive navigation buttons is missing, I cannot tell why moto always skip it but it would be nice if they use this empty space for capacitive buttons. The power button and volume keys are small, it almost look alike like in the iPhone’s, which is not a bad thing, the keys are hard to press but it gives a positive feel when click. The forehead of the phone consists of sensors and a 16MP camera with front flash. The hybrid sim tray is moved to the top of the phone. There are total 3 microphones in this phone. One at the front, one at the back and one at the top. The USB provided is Type-c, very 2017, and the placement of headphone jack couldn’t be more precise, it is where it should be. And if that wasn’t all, the phone is waterproof as well with an IP68 rating. Meaning accidentally dropping your phone in pool will protect the phone. Theoretically yes but I don’t recommend doing that, But IP68 brings that peace to the mind where I can use this phone in rain without worrying about damaging it.
The screen resolution provided is 1080 but it is packed in a 5.2 inch display. It can be considered as an average sized screen but I like the way it is, because of this the phone fits perfectly in the hand and if you have slightly bigger palms you can even use the moto X4 with one hand. And one may argue that the glass panel at the back makes this phone very slippery. The fact that it is a glass back points to a contrary conclusion. Well this was not the case with me. And the round edges gives us a firm grip over the phone. And the phone doesn’t weigh much.
The full HD screen offers a pleasant and attractive viewing angles, the visibility even in direct sunlight is great. The screen is protected by gorilla glass. So I’m not throwing an extra screen protection and so far it is holding up good. There are no scratches yet and I don’t intend to get one.
Now coming inside the phone, it runs on Android 7.1.1. The experience is pretty stock-ish. Stock-ish because you don’t want your phone just to be bloat free, you also want all the good features and gesture built right in the software. The stand moto actions are supported, like the chop motion to turn on flashlight, wrist twist to open camera, one button navigation and many more. The moto display is there and a built in night display to reduce strain on your eyes during night. The moto voice is also supported, which works flawlessly but it is limited to things it can do. But your socks will be blown off it you see how fast and accurate the moto voice is. Just say “show me chrome” or “show me whatsapp” and it will automatically open it for you. You don’t even need to unlock the phone. It works all the time. While gaming while watching videos, while sitting idle on the desk. But there is security concern here as it can then unlock the phone with a similar voice and a voice recording too. So use it when you know what you are getting into it. There is also one another surprise, the moto key, what it basically does is it lets you use Moto X4’s fingerprint sensor to unlock your windows 10 laptop if it doesn’t have windows hello hardware. I think this is nice because it lets you create a connection between your devices which is most seen in flagship Samsung and Apple devices.
The other specs include a new Snapdragon 630 processor, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, 4G with Volte, pretty muchall the sensors even the compass sensor which Moto used to skip in its most mid-range phones, and finally a 3000mAh battery with Motorola’s TurboPower fast charging to give you the power you need to make the most of your day. The charging rate is very fast it can charge up to 30-35% in 30mins. The battery lasted for a full working day. Which includes browsing internet, streaming music, texting, calling and 4G data on all the time with Wi-Fi connected. The fingerprint sensor works fairly fast and works almost all the time.
The phone can do regular tasks pretty easily without any hiccups. I didn’t face any app crashes or UI lags at all. The only complain I have is it heats up easily with data on which is normal but I wish Moto can optimize it in the next iteration of this X series.
There is only one front facing speaker which is by far the best sounding speaker I’ve ever seen in phone. The speaker is not loud but the quality of the speaker is, simply put “the best” there is plenty of bass. The sound is crystal clear. Treble is well balanced. Most of the time I found myself listening music through the loudspeaker instead of earphones. Speaking of earphones, the sound in earphones is exceptional you also customize the audio output, the 3d stereo effect takes the listening experience to next level. If it was not about the camera more I’d say this will be best music devices. And speaking of devices you can connect multiple Bluetooth devices at once. Yes you heard that right. You can connect up to 4 Bluetooth speakers and create your own stereo system. Or you and your friends can listen to same song at once without sharing one pair of earphones.
And while I was using the phone, I found one interesting setting which I cannot confirm yet but in the sound settings there is a wireless charging sound options and with the glass back it makes it more is convincing.
What makes the Moto X4 even more special is the camera, the rear dual-camera at the back is 12 MP camera which uses dual autofocus pixel technology to deliver crisp results in any light, while the 8 MP camera gives you a 120° field of view.
The default camera is the same app which see in other moto phones, but this time this app is loaded with many features like the portrait mode, spot coloring, ultra-wide view and face filters. The photos in good lighting comes very good. The colors are accurate and there is not much noise. Here are some sample shots that we took during our review process. The depth effect is not great but you get a post adjustment option to edit the blur. The spot color feature works flawlessly it choose one color in the live preview and then turns everything else in the picture black and white. wide angle lens covers a substantial area but one thing I don’t like about this lens is the details and colors are lost.
In the video recording it doesn’t have Optical Image stabilization, but it has cool motion blur like effect in videos which is like an electronic image stabilization but this unknown stabilization can be seen while recording unlike other smartphones. The recorded video comes great. It can record 4K video in 30fps and 1080p video even at 60fps. Here’s a little sample footage around our office.
There are some handy feature like landmark detection and object detection which are another cool little camera goodies to play around with. The same goes for selfie panoramas, which really offer a wider view by panning the phone around just slightly. The front camera is 16 MP with front flash which is optimized for low light photos also helps in low-light.
So to summarize my experience with Moto X4:
I can’t pin point the one thing that I like the most, the whole thing is so beautiful it’s just so lustrous and classy. The Moto X4 looks like a pretty premium smartphone, for the most part it is but at the price of 21000 rupees you are not paying much. The unique moto features, great design and specs makes it stand out in budget friendly market where people wants a flagship phone but doesn’t want to spend a fortune to get one. It has some cons like the slow camera app which can be fixed with software update and slight heating issues but it is a glass phone. But the good news the Oreo update is coming this new year. So this everything you are getting in a package deal. And in my experience I think this phone is the one to go with if you want a complete and classy phone but don’t want to buy any cheap or very expensive phones. This is a 10 on 10 phone.
