Gionee A1 Android Oreo Update

Reviewed by Vipin Yadav - Published on

Gionee, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, creates Selfie-centric smartphones and focuses more on the offline market rather than online presence.  The company launched two decent smartphones, Gionee A1 and Gionee A1 Plus, at MWC 2017.

How to get Gionee A1 Android Oreo Update? Keep reading to find out.

The Gionee A1 mobile is a direct competitor to the new Vivo V5S as it fits in the similar category of the camera and comes in the same price range. A1 beats the Vivo V5S in most aspects, from battery size to the display. A1 specifications are quite decent. The phone is slightly bigger, thicker and heavier. Just like Vivo and Oppo camera phone, it looks a lot like iPhone 7 in terms of UI.

The Best thing about Gionee A1?

Its Camera! A1 features 16 MP of Front Camera for Selfie obsessed users and 4 GB of RAM with 5.5” inches of Display. Gionee A1 runs on Amigo based OS Android Nougat 7.0.

Gionee A1 Design and Display:

Gionee A1 is packed with a metal body and has curved edges which feels great while holding this phone. The rounded corners and curved back give A1 a good grip. There are three color variants available for this phone – Gold, Black, and Grey. I liked Matte Black more than other variants. The back of the phone is made of full metal which is A600 aircraft-grade material.

Wondering what “A600 aircraft-grade material” is?

It is an aluminum alloy used in making of premium planes and cars. It offers durability with the feeling of a premium look.

The fingerprint scanner is on the front sitting on the home button. The fingerprint sensor is very fast and unlocking the phone only takes a fraction of a second.  And guess what? You don’t even need to press the home button to unlock the phone. You can unlock the phone just with a touch.

The Power and volume button are placed on the right side. SIM tray is on the left side. The 3.5mm earphone jack is placed on the top. Micro-USB charging port and the loudspeaker is at the bottom of the phone. Gionee A1 speaker comes with Waves Maxx Audio which gets really loud while watching videos. Like Really Loud!

Is there a Front Flash in Gionee A1?

Yes, there is. The front camera is placed above the screen on the right side with front flash or “Selfie Flash” on the left side. The rear camera is at the center which is a little bit extended but not much noticeable like Moto G5 Plus. The dual-LED Flashlight is just placed below the primary camera. Below the Dual-LED Flashlight, there is a Gionee’s logo which pretty much looks like a Fingerprint reader. We wasted our 2 minutes unlocking the phone from the logo on the back first.  You can see the antenna lines at the top and bottom which you get to see in many other phones nowadays like Redmi Note 4.

Gionee A1 feels heavy!

With the screen size of 5.5-inch, Gionee A1 weighs 183 grams which is slightly heavier than Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime (167 grams) and Moto M (163 grams). This could be one of the cons of A1. But if weight is not a factor you consider while buying a phone, you can go for it.

Gionee A1 Display comes with a 5.5-inch AMOLED display covered with a 2.5D curved glass with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixel at a pixel density of 401 PPI. The screen is also protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 4 Scratch Resistant display. A1’s display gets really bright when using the phone in sunlight and the color is bright and sharp. It has AMOLED display, but the black color does not seem true black, we can see the backlight dripping behind the screen.

So, how does Gionee’s in-house Amigo 4.0 OS feel on this display? Keep reading to find out.

Gionee A1 Software and UI

The Gionee A1 runs in-house Amigo 4.0 OS which is based on Android Nougat 7.0. It is almost similar to Android 7.0.  The UI, design, and app icons are much cleaner. The device also supports unique features like split screen functionality and edge swipes on the home button to open drawer like sidebar which can also be customized.

Does Gionee A1 have any bloatware apps?

The phone comes bundled with many apps like Amazon, Messenger, Truecaller, Saavn, Swiftkey Keyboard and complete suite of Google Apps which occupies around 12 GB, but there were not many bloatware apps. There are also a lot of smart gestures which will allow users to answer the calls by picking the phone up and flip over to turn the alarm off. You can also double tap to wake up the phone instead of pressing the power button. You won’t see any app drawer. All the apps are on home screen. Though you can install Google Now Launcher if you need an app drawer. You will also get some themes and wallpapers from “Theme Park and Mood Wallpaper”. One thing many will dislike about the UI is notifications are not visible on the lock screen. So yeah, you cannot see notifications unless and until you unlock the phone.

Is Gionee A1 getting Android Oreo Update?

Gionee has not released an official Oreo update for A1 but you can install it manually. Here is how to install Android Oreo on Gionee A1.

And now here comes the best part about Gionee A1!

Gionee A1 Camera:

Front camera:

Gionee A1 is a selfie-centric phone and much like Vivo and Oppo camera phones. A1 camera is tough to beat in terms of a number of pixels. A1 comes with a 16 MP front camera with front flash which helps you click good photos even in low light and dark room. The Selfies were sharp, detailed and vibrant but I can’t help but notice some color tone which seemed to be artificial. The phone comes bundled with many filters and camera modes. There are many live filters available from which slimming, smoothening, and enlarging eye is possible even before the shots are taken. But the pictures from Gionee A1 is not as good as compared to its peers like Moto G5 Plus and Vivo V5S.

Gionee A1 Front Camera

Rear Camera:

The rear camera is 13 MP with Dual tone LED flash which can capture good pictures but again, not better than its peers. Indoor photos look a bit grainy in standard lighting but outdoor photos are sharp and crisp with slightly blurred background effect. But images captured at the night had some noise in it. Camera app provides plenty of features like Time-lapse, Slow-motion, Translator, Professional mode. The camera uses the Sony IMX258 sensor which supports Auto Focus, Face Detection, HDR, Geo-tagging, Touch Focus, Digital Zoom and Video Recording of Full HD resolution at 30fps. The video quality was decent.

Gionee A1 Processor:

Gionee A1 is powered by 2 GHz of Octa-core MediaTek Helio P10 processor with 4GB of RAM. It packs massive 64GB of internal storage and it is also expandable up to 256GB. A1 is very powerful in terms of processor and speed which helps it running heavy graphics games smoothly. Asphalt 8 runs smoothly without any frame rate drops. Gionee A1 Plus and Gionee S6 Pro are two Gionee 4 GB RAM Phones you can go for if Performance and RAM is the factor you consider first while buying the phone.

Gionee A1 Battery:

Gionee A1 battery life is quite impressive. The phone packs large non-replaceable 4010mAh battery, and also support fast charging. The battery can easily last up to 2 days. According to the company, it has 18W ‘ultrafast charging’ that charges the battery fully in 2 hours. We used it as an average user with 3 to 4 social media apps, video streaming on YouTube and some amount of navigation. We ended up with around 20-25 percentage of battery at the end of the day.

Gionee A1 Hardware and Sensors:

Many users have this common question that Does Gionee A1 have a pulse light notification?

Yes, it does! The Gionee A1 is a dual SIM smartphone that accepts two Nano-SIMs. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, USB OTG, FM, 3G and 4G with support for Band 40 used by LTE networks in India. The Call quality was quite decent and there was no voice cracking issues. Sensors on the phone include Compass Magnetometer, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor and Gyroscope.

So, is Gionee A1 worth buying?

The Pros of the Gionee A1 are its bigger battery and the Selfie Camera. Also, you get Android 7.0 Nougat. The only con of this phone is that while charging it heats up which is not a major problem but it does get really pesky. So, if you are one of those Selfie-obsessed users Gionee A1 is definitely a good option to go for in this price range. Some of the A1 competitors which fall in the same price segment are Vivo V5 Plus, Oppo F1, and Samsung Galaxy J7. Gionee A1 mobile prices around Rs. 19, 000 and is easily available in retail stores. The phone packs the best specs but it is not as good as its peers in the same price range.

If you are looking for the low budget phones under Rs. 10,000, then here is the list of Gionee low price mobile phones:

  1. Gionee P7 Max
  2. Gionee P7
  3. Gionee F103 Pro
  4. Gionee M5 Lite
